Basic Allowance for Housing

The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a U.S. based allowance prescribed by geographic duty location, pay grade, and dependency status. It provides uniformed Service members equitable housing compensation based on housing costs in local civilian housing markets within the United States when government quarters are not provided. A uniformed service member stationed outside the U.S., including U.S. territories and possessions, not furnished government housing, is eligible for Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA).

This BAH is provided to the Chapter 33 Post 9/11 service members, dependents of service members, and spouses of service members who are not on active duty unless the spouse is also a service member.

To receive the full benefit you must be enrolled full time and at 100% entitlement.

The benefit decreases from ¾ time to ½ time and is not payable for less than half time. The benefit is also decreased if you are at 40-90% entitlement. For example, if you are enrolled full time but only receiving 90% entitlement then you would receive 90% of the full time payable BAH.

The student will also receive the BAH if you are enrolled in online classes. If you are taking all your classes online you will receive BAH at 50% of the national average. If you are enrolled in a combination of online and standard classroom instruction, you will receive the BAH based on entitlement and training time rate.
